Central government has notified a special economic zone (SEZ) proposed by Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing at Dholera in the western state of Gujarat, paving the way for the country’s first semiconductor fabrication facility, the government said on Wednesday.

The SEZ, located in Dholera, will cover 66.16 hectare and is intended for electronic hardware and software, including IT and IT-enabled services, according to a report by PTI.

Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing has proposed an investment of Rs 91,000 crore for the chip fabrication unit, a cornerstone project in India’s push to build a domestic semiconductor ecosystem. The proposal was cleared by the board of approval, the apex decision-making body for SEZ matters, chaired by the commerce secretary.

The project is expected to generate around 21,000 jobs, the government said.

The notification adds to a growing list of newly approved SEZs linked to electronics and manufacturing. These include projects by CG Semi with a proposed investment of Rs 2,150 crore, Kaynes Semicon at Rs 681 crore, Micron Semiconductor Technology India with Rs 13,000 crore, and the Hubballi Durable Goods Cluster with an investment of Rs 100 crore.

India has been accelerating approvals and incentives for chipmaking and allied industries as it seeks to reduce dependence on imports and position itself as a global electronics manufacturing hub.
