Today, Lam Research, a leader in semiconductor wafer fabrication technology, released its 2021 Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Report. Driven by the Guiding Principle, ‘Act with Purpose for a better world,’ Lam was one of the first companies in the semiconductor industry to proactively set a 100 percent net zero goal and continues to take a leading role in the semiconductor industry on climate action.

The latest, in-depth report outlines Lam’s framework for achieving the net zero goal by 2050 and details the company’s progress in driving a healthy, safe, inclusive, and diverse workforce while contributing positively to the broader community through its new ESG framework, Powering Breakthroughs Together.

Key highlights from the report include:

  • Lam’s new social impact program which will drive progress in three focus areas: Transformative Learning, Resilient Communities, and Inclusive Societies. Under the new platform, the company is introducing a new application system for Lam’s grant program to make it easier for organizations to apply.
  • Investments into building a healthier, more diverse and inclusive semiconductor workforce for today and tomorrow through the expansion of employee benefits, a re-envisioning of the company’s flexible workplace policy and ongoing commitment to foster inclusion and diversity through internal programming and external partnerships with National Consortium of Graduate Degrees for Minorities (GEM) and the United Negro College Fund, among others.
  • Progress toward reducing Lam’s environmental footprint in order to meet the company’s goal to operate on 100 percent renewable energy by 2030 and become carbon net zero by 2050. Notably, in 2021, over half of Lam’s energy used globally was renewably sourced, with facilities in Ohio, U.S.; Penang, Malaysia; and China reaching 100 percent renewable energy. The report details Lam’s continued progress towards these goals through operational, supply chain, and product strategies that drive energy and water conservation, waste abatement, and greenhouse gas reductions.
  • The latest portfolio of smarter, faster, more sustainable leading-edge products introduced by Lam in 2021 that improved generator efficiency for NAND and foundry logic development by up to 15 percent, shortened clean times via chamber modifications by up to 50 percent, and decreased tool usage of helium by up to 80 percent. The report outlines how ESG principles are key considerations for Lam products throughout their lifecycle – including responsible development, design, and manufacturing and exploring ways to extend product life while delivering products that support our customers’ ESG goals.
